\u201cI believe this is yours,\u201d she said, her voice cool and measured, utterly devoid of emotion. \u201cMy name is Eleanor Vance, and I represent\u2026\u201d She paused, looking pointedly at his sister. \u201c\u2026his wife.\u201d<\/p>\n

The words hit me like a physical blow. The air rushed out of my lungs. My knees buckled. I gripped the doorframe, trying to make sense of the syllables that had just been spoken. \u201cHis\u2026 his wife?\u201d I managed to croak, the sound raw and unfamiliar.\u00a0No. It can\u2019t be. We\u2019ve been together for years. We live here. We talked about forever.<\/em><\/p>\n

His sister finally spoke, her voice strained. \u201cHe never divorced her. He told us he did. But he never did.\u201d She pointed at the stranger. \u201cThis is his wife\u2019s lawyer. She\u2019s here to\u2026 to sort things out.\u201d<\/p>\n

The lawyer stepped forward. \u201cI understand this is a shock. My client, Mrs. [Partner\u2019s Last Name], has been trying to locate you for some time. We actually tracked you through a joint bank account that was recently flagged during discovery in their ongoing, uncontested divorce proceedings.\u201d<\/p>\n

Uncontested? Divorce proceedings? Ongoing?<\/em>\u00a0My head was spinning. The room tilted.\u00a0He told me he was divorced. Years ago. Before we even met!<\/strong>\u00a0Everything, every memory, every tender word, every plan for the future, felt like it was dissolving into ash around me.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2026 what do you mean, ongoing?\u201d I stammered, tears blurring my vision. \u201cWe bought this house together! We\u2026 we\u2019re building a life!\u201d<\/p>\n

The lawyer sighed, a small, weary sound. \u201cThis house, regrettably, is part of my client\u2019s marital assets. It was purchased, apparently, during a period of reconciliation you were unaware of. Legally, you have no claim. You are simply\u2026 an occupant.\u201d<\/p>\n

AN OCCUPANT. In my own home. My sanctuary. It felt like the walls themselves were laughing at me. The betrayal was a living thing, tearing at my insides. This wasn\u2019t just a lie. This was a complete fabrication of my entire existence with him.<\/p>\n

We can arrange for your personal belongings to be shipped to an address of your choosing, or you can take what you can carry now.\u201d<\/p>\n

VACATE. My legs gave out. I slid down the doorframe, landing hard on the floor. My eyes wide, staring at the woman who was calmly instructing me to leave the life I thought was mine.\u00a0My home, my future, my very identity as a partner\u2014all of it was being stripped away, before sunset.<\/strong>\u00a0The uninvited guests weren\u2019t just exposing a secret; they were delivering the karma meant for\u00a0him<\/em>, but it was gutting\u00a0me<\/em>.
