My cheek burned, and the cream-colored dress I'd chosen for our first morning as husband and wife suddenly felt unbearably tight.

Julian stood in front of me, breathing heavily.

His mother, Victoria, watched from the head of the table.

His father, Malcolm, lowered his newspaper.

His sister, Claire, leaned back in her chair.

Nobody moved to help me.

The Vance mansion stood on seventeen acres outside Greenwich, Connecticut. Its stone walls, iron gates, and carefully maintained gardens had impressed me when Julian first brought me there.

That morning, the house felt like a prison.

The long walnut dining table was set with expensive porcelain. Fresh flowers stood in crystal vases, and sunlight streamed through the enormous windows.

Everything looked beautiful.

But I'd just discovered how little beauty mattered inside those walls.

My name is Elena. I was thirty-six years old, the daughter of a schoolteacher from Ohio, and until the previous evening, I'd believed I was marrying a man who respected my independence.

Julian Vance was forty-one, handsome, educated, and the chief executive of Vance Meridian, a company specializing in logistics, security systems, and commercial property services.

He'd pursued me for six months before proposing.

During our courtship, he seemed thoughtful and generous. He remembered small details about my life, listened when I discussed my work, and told me he admired women who built successful careers.

When I expressed concerns about his family's controlling behavior, he assured me he wasn't like them.

I wanted to believe him.

But one morning after our wedding, he'd shown me exactly who he was.

The argument began over breakfast.

Victoria had decided that a newly married woman should prepare the family's morning meal. Although the mansion employed a full kitchen staff, she informed me that making breakfast was a tradition among Vance brides.

I had slept barely three hours after our wedding reception.

Nevertheless, I went downstairs and prepared omelets while the housekeeper, Marta, organized the coffee.

Victoria tasted the food and immediately lowered her fork.

"Too salty."

Claire laughed.

"Perhaps Elena is better at signing contracts than cooking."

Malcolm folded his newspaper.

"A Vance wife should learn to accept criticism gracefully."

I placed the coffee pot on the sideboard.

"A Vance wife shouldn't be treated like an employee."

Victoria's eyes narrowed.

"Excuse me?"

I met her stare.

"You heard me."

Julian pushed back his chair.

"Don't speak to my mother that way."

I turned toward him.

"I'm asking to be treated respectfully."

His expression changed.

The charming man who'd held my hand at the altar less than twenty-four hours earlier disappeared.

"You need to understand your place in this family."

I looked at him.

"I understand it perfectly now."

His hand moved before I could say anything else.

The impact knocked my head sideways.

Then came the silence.

I touched my cheek.

Julian stood waiting for me to apologize.

Victoria looked satisfied.

Claire smiled.

Malcolm returned his attention to the newspaper.

They seemed to believe the matter had been settled.

Instead, I slowly removed my wedding ring.

Julian frowned.

"What are you doing?"

I placed the ring beside my untouched plate.

"Ending your family."

Then I picked up my purse.

Julian laughed.

"Don't be ridiculous. Where are you going?"

I didn't answer.

I'd already spent too many months answering questions designed to make me defend decisions I had every right to make.

As I walked toward the dining-room entrance, my phone began ringing.

The caller was Adrian Holt, my attorney.

I answered.

"Elena, the board just received everything."

I stopped.

Behind me, Julian went quiet.

Adrian continued.

"The independent directors have acknowledged the evidence package. They've called an emergency meeting."

I looked toward Julian.

His face had become pale.

"What evidence?" he demanded.

I ignored him.

Adrian asked whether I was somewhere safe.

"Not yet."

"Leave the property. Call me when you're clear of the gates."

I ended the call.

Julian stepped toward me.

"Elena, what have you done?"

I looked at the man I'd married.

"Something I should have done before yesterday."

Then I walked out of the dining room.

I could hear Victoria calling after me.

She demanded that I return and explain myself.

I kept walking.

Marta was standing near the service corridor.

She'd witnessed the argument from the doorway, and her expression was filled with concern.

"Mrs. Vance, are you all right?"

I stopped.

"Please call me Elena."

She nodded.

I took her hand.

"Thank you for trying to help."

Her eyes filled.

Then she whispered, "Be careful."

I promised I would.

Outside, the morning air was cold.

I crossed the stone terrace, climbed into my car, and locked the doors.

Only then did I allow my hands to shake.

I had expected Julian to become angry.

I had expected Victoria to blame me.

But some part of me had still hoped my husband would recognize what he'd done and try to stop me leaving.

Instead, he was concerned about the board.

That told me everything I needed to know.

I started the engine and drove toward the gates.

As the mansion disappeared behind me, I remembered something my father used to say.

He taught history at a public school in Ohio for thirty-four years. He never earned much money, but he believed a person's character was revealed by how they treated people who couldn't offer them anything in return.

He died before meeting Julian.

For months, I'd wished he could have been at my wedding.

Now I was grateful he'd never witnessed what happened at breakfast.

My phone rang again.

Adrian.

"I'm outside the gates," I told him.

"Good. Where are you going?"

"My apartment."

"Is anyone there?"

"No."

He asked me to consider going somewhere Julian couldn't immediately reach me. He also recommended obtaining medical attention and preserving an accurate record of the assault.

I agreed.

Then he told me the emergency board meeting was scheduled for ten-thirty.

It was already nine-forty.

I glanced at the clock.

Before lunch, Julian would have to answer questions he'd spent months avoiding.

And this time, he wouldn't be able to silence the person asking them.

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: WHILE I DOCUMENTED THE ASSAULT, JULIAN DISCOVERED THAT THE BOARD HAD RECEIVED THE EVIDENCE HE BELIEVED I WOULD NEVER REVEAL

[1

post-9022","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-family-drama-stories
["GET
