The decision considered the original conduct, the accuracy of the written reports, earlier complaints, the employees' responses, and the hotel's existing disciplinary procedures.

I deliberately stayed out of the final personnel meetings.

I'd been the guest involved, and I owned the company. Both facts gave me influence that could easily overwhelm a fair review if I wasn't careful.

I wanted Helena to reach her conclusions based on the evidence.

Not on whether I was angry.

Patricia's review confirmed that she'd failed to use the available reservation procedures and had made dismissive comments based on assumptions about my appearance.

She'd also submitted an incomplete incident report.

Those were serious failures.

But the review found no earlier documented disciplinary action against her, and she'd voluntarily corrected her statement before the process concluded.

Helena recommended a formal suspension, a final written warning, and mandatory retraining before Patricia could return to guest-facing duties.

Her continued employment would depend on meeting clear performance and conduct requirements.

I reviewed the recommendation.

Then I asked Nadia one question.

"Would this be the same decision if the guest had been Rebecca Lawson?"

She considered it.

"Based on Patricia's documented record and the applicable procedures, yes."

I nodded.

"Then proceed."

Karla's case was different.

She'd received prior written guidance about reservation escalation and guest communication. She continued defending the procedure that contributed to the problem, submitted an inaccurate account, and attempted to blame Lupita for identifying the reservation.

The review also substantiated concerns about the way she'd addressed the housekeeper after the incident.

After completing the required process, the company ended Karla's employment.

The decision wasn't announced to the staff as a public punishment.

Helena informed Karla privately, explained the findings and applicable procedures, and handled the separation through HR.

I wasn't present.

I didn't need to be.

When Nadia told me the process was complete, I felt no satisfaction.

Karla had made decisions that warranted consequences, but losing a job wasn't something I considered a victory.

I hoped she'd eventually understand why her treatment of guests and coworkers was unacceptable.

Whether she did was no longer something I could control.

Then Nadia told me Patricia had asked to speak with Lupita.

Helena had explained that Lupita wasn't obligated to participate in a conversation simply because Patricia wanted to apologize.

Lupita requested time to consider it.

I appreciated that the decision was being left to her.

For weeks, people had spoken about Lupita as though she were the cheerful housekeeper who rescued the hotel owner's family.

But she was also an employee who'd been criticized for helping and then drawn into a highly public incident.

She deserved control over whether she wanted a personal conversation with someone involved.

Eventually, Lupita agreed to meet Patricia with an HR representative present.

Patricia apologized for dismissing her suggestion and allowing Karla to blame her.

Lupita listened.

Then she said she appreciated the apology but hoped Patricia understood the issue was bigger than their disagreement.

"You didn't listen because you thought I didn't know anything about reservations."

Patricia looked down.

Lupita continued.

"And you didn't listen to the guest because you thought he didn't belong at the hotel."

Patricia nodded.

"I know."

Lupita was quiet for a moment.

Then she said, "Those are two different people you decided weren't worth listening to."

Patricia began crying.

Lupita didn't rush to comfort her.

She simply waited.

Then she said she hoped Patricia would use the training to become a better receptionist.

The meeting ended without any dramatic embrace or promise that everything was forgiven.

But Patricia had heard something she needed to hear.

Later that afternoon, Daniel met with Nadia to review his own responsibilities.

The operational findings confirmed that he'd allowed the unresolved-reservation procedure to continue despite earlier complaints. He'd also failed to follow up adequately after staff raised concerns.

He accepted a formal corrective management plan with corporate oversight.

The plan required him to implement the revised procedures, improve complaint handling, address departmental cooperation, and demonstrate measurable progress.

Nadia would review the results regularly.

Daniel understood that continued failure could affect his position.

When I met with him afterward, he didn't attempt to minimize what happened.

"I should've stopped that procedure when the first complaints came in."

I nodded.

"Yes."

He looked down.

"I thought the refunds and alternative arrangements meant the issues were resolved."

"The financial transactions were resolved," I replied. "The underlying problems weren't."

He agreed.

Then he asked whether I still trusted him.

I considered the question.

"I trust you to understand what went wrong. Whether that becomes meaningful change depends on what you do next."

He nodded.

For the first time since the incident, we weren't discussing apologies.

We were discussing responsibilities.

That evening, I explained to Lily that the hotel was making changes so guests would receive better help when something went wrong.

She listened carefully.

Then she asked whether Lupita was in trouble.

"No."

Lily looked relieved.

"Good."

I smiled.

"She helped us, remember?"

Lily nodded.

Then she looked toward Benjamin.

"She should get a gold star."

I laughed.

"Maybe she should."

But after Lily went to bed, I thought about the difference between giving Lupita a symbolic reward and making sure the company treated employees like her fairly every day.

A gold star might make a nice photograph.

It wouldn't change how housekeeping employees were supervised, trained, or given opportunities to develop their careers.

I wanted us to do something more substantial.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: Ethan Returned to His Wife’s Old Office and Found a Reminder That Hospitality Had Never Been About Recognizing Important People

[1

post-8993","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-family-drama-stories
["GET
