Under his leadership, the property had maintained strong occupancy, expanded its corporate business, and received several industry awards.

When Sarah died, Daniel sent flowers to our home and arranged for the Grand Regent's staff to make a donation to a children's hospice program in her memory.

I'd considered him a trusted manager.

That made the findings difficult to accept.

On Thursday, Nadia and I met with Daniel in the corporate office. Helena joined us to ensure that any employment-related matters were handled separately from the operational review.

Daniel arrived carrying a thick folder.

He looked exhausted.

"I know I've let you down," he began.

I asked him to sit.

"I need to understand what happened before we discuss that."

Nadia opened the hotel's performance reports.

During the previous year, the Grand Regent had implemented a program intended to reduce check-in delays. The front desk was expected to maintain a short average processing time, especially during large corporate events.

The goal wasn't unreasonable.

Long lines frustrated guests and created operational problems throughout the hotel.

But the implementation had been flawed.

Managers were rewarded for keeping the queue moving. Employees were praised when they completed check-ins quickly, while complicated reservations were often treated as interruptions that needed to be resolved elsewhere.

The secondary corporate system required additional steps.

Sometimes locating a booking meant contacting the corporate travel department or checking with another team.

Those actions took time.

Karla responded by encouraging employees to stop searching when a reservation wasn't immediately available.

Daniel knew she'd introduced that practice.

He hadn't examined its consequences.

Nadia pointed to a report showing a reduction in average check-in time during the same period that unresolved booking complaints increased.

"Did you review these together?"

Daniel looked down.

"No."

"Why?"

He hesitated.

"We were focused on the targets."

I studied the figures.

A system designed to improve guest service had created pressure to avoid spending time on the guests who needed the most help.

I asked whether corporate management had contributed to that pressure.

Daniel nodded.

"The regional reports emphasized efficiency and profitability. We were competing with the other flagship properties."

That answer troubled me.

The targets hadn't been created in isolation.

They reflected priorities I'd approved at the corporate level.

I looked at Nadia.

"We need to review how we're measuring success across all seven hotels."

She nodded.

Then we discussed staffing.

The Grand Regent had reduced some front desk coverage during quieter periods while increasing staffing around major events. The schedule looked efficient on paper, but employees reported that unexpected arrivals and reservation discrepancies could overwhelm the available team.

Housekeeping faced similar pressures.

Lupita's department had experienced increased room turnover without a corresponding review of the time allocated for complex cleaning assignments.

Nadia hadn't yet established whether staffing levels were inappropriate, but the concerns deserved examination.

I thought about Lupita stopping to help us while carrying a full load of towels.

She'd been doing something valuable.

Yet the first response from another department had been to tell her she was interfering.

I asked Daniel whether employees were encouraged to report problems outside their assigned areas.

He said the hotel's written policy supported cross-department cooperation.

Then he admitted that the actual culture had become more rigid.

Supervisors were focused on keeping their departments on schedule.

Helping someone elsewhere could be treated as failing to complete one's assigned work.

I sat back.

Sarah had wanted the hotel to operate as one team.

Somewhere along the way, we'd created departments that were increasingly reluctant to help one another.

Daniel looked at me.

"I should have recognized it."

I nodded.

"Yes."

He waited.

Then I added, "And corporate management should have asked better questions."

Nadia looked up.

I continued.

"We can't reward managers for efficiency and then act surprised when they prioritize the numbers we give them."

That didn't excuse Karla's behavior or Patricia's dismissive treatment.

But it meant the review couldn't end with two employees receiving disciplinary action.

The system around them needed attention.

We spent the next two hours discussing immediate changes.

Unresolved reservations would no longer be treated as ordinary walk-in requests without verification. Employees would have a clear escalation procedure, and a manager or trained specialist would remain responsible for helping the guest while the booking was investigated.

We would also review the performance metrics so employees weren't penalized for spending necessary time resolving legitimate problems.

Nadia would assess staffing and training needs across the hotel.

Daniel agreed to cooperate.

Then Helena raised another concern.

Patricia and Karla had submitted written accounts of the incident, but those accounts didn't match several independently verified details.

The review had also received information suggesting that Karla had pressured Lupita after she helped me.

Helena explained that both employees would have the opportunity to respond to the evidence before any disciplinary decision was made.

I agreed.

"I don't want the outcome decided because the guest happened to be me."

Daniel looked surprised.

I continued.

"If another guest had experienced this, the conduct would still need to be reviewed. My ownership shouldn't determine whether the employees receive a fair process."

Helena nodded.

The meeting ended shortly after noon.

As Daniel gathered his papers, he looked at me.

"Ethan, are you going to replace me?"

I considered the question.

"I haven't made that decision."

He nodded slowly.

Then he said, "I thought running a successful hotel meant keeping the numbers strong."

I looked at him.

"The numbers matter. But they don't tell you everything that happened to the people who walked through the door."

He closed his folder.

For the first time since the incident, he seemed to understand that I wasn't asking him to make the problem disappear quickly.

I was asking him to acknowledge how long it had been developing.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: Karla Tried to Blame the Housekeeper for the Incident, but the Reservation Logs and Witness Statements Told a Different Story

[1

post-8987","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-family-drama-stories
["GET
