We weren't expecting you until later."

"Our flight was delayed. I thought the corporate office had updated the arrival information."

Daniel glanced at Patricia's computer.

"The reservation is confirmed."

"Yes. Lupita helped them find it."

Daniel looked toward the housekeeper.

Then he turned to Patricia.

"Was there a problem with the secondary booking system?"

Patricia opened her mouth.

Karla answered first.

"The guest wasn't appearing in the regular reservations."

I looked at her.

"You didn't check the secondary system until Lupita suggested it."

Karla's expression tightened.

Daniel looked between us.

For a moment, I could see him beginning to understand that this hadn't been an ordinary technical problem.

Lily stirred against my shoulder.

"Daddy?"

I kissed her forehead.

"I'm here, sweetheart."

She opened her eyes slightly.

"Are we home?"

"Not yet. We're at the hotel."

She looked around the lobby.

Then she noticed the roses.

"Are Mommy's flowers okay?"

My throat tightened.

"They're fine."

She closed her eyes again.

Daniel immediately called a bell attendant and asked him to prepare the elevator. He offered to have our luggage sent directly to the suite.

I thanked him.

Then he turned toward Patricia.

"Please complete Mr. Vance's check-in."

She began typing so quickly that she entered the wrong information twice.

Her hands were shaking.

I felt no satisfaction watching her struggle.

The difference between the way she'd treated me five minutes earlier and the way she was treating me now was too obvious to ignore.

Before she handed over the room keys, I asked her a question.

"If the reservation hadn't belonged to the owner, would you have checked the secondary system?"

She looked down.

"Sir, I apologize."

"That wasn't my question."

Daniel remained silent.

Patricia swallowed.

"I should have checked it when you asked."

I nodded.

"Yes."

She handed me the keys.

Then Daniel offered to arrange complimentary room service, additional amenities, and anything else Lily needed.

I looked at him.

"Right now, she needs a bed."

"Of course."

I adjusted my backpack and started toward the elevators.

Then I stopped.

"Lupita?"

She looked up.

"Yes, sir?"

"Thank you for treating us kindly."

She smiled.

"I hope your little girl gets some rest."

I looked toward Patricia and Karla.

"That's what good hospitality sounds like."

Neither answered.

Daniel accompanied us to the elevator.

Inside, he asked whether I wanted to discuss the incident that evening.

"Not while I'm carrying my daughter."

"Of course."

"But I want the reservation records preserved. And I want the security footage from the lobby reviewed."

He nodded.

"I'll arrange it."

I looked at him.

"I also want Lupita's account of what happened. She shouldn't face trouble because she stepped outside her department to help a guest."

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"Understood."

The elevator opened on the ninth floor.

Suite 904 was at the end of a quiet corridor. Daniel opened the door and stepped aside.

The suite was spacious, with a sitting room, two bedrooms, and tall windows overlooking the city.

Sarah had helped choose the original furnishings when the Grand Regent opened.

I remembered her standing in that room, insisting that the lighting beside the beds needed to be softer because exhausted travelers didn't want bright lamps shining into their faces.

Now I carried our daughter into the smaller bedroom and placed her gently on the bed.

Lily immediately reached for her backpack.

"Rabbit."

I opened it.

Snacks.

Tablet.

Spare clothes.

No rabbit.

I checked again.

Then I remembered her holding it at the reception desk before she fell asleep.

My stomach dropped.

I must have dropped it while adjusting the roses and trying to manage the conversation.

Lily sat up.

"Where's Benjamin?"

Benjamin was the stuffed rabbit Sarah had given her shortly before her illness became serious.

It had one ear that bent sideways and a small patch on its back where Sarah had repaired a torn seam.

Lily slept with it every night.

I looked toward Daniel.

"I think we left her rabbit in the lobby."

He immediately reached for his phone.

"I'll have security check."

Lily's eyes filled.

"Mommy gave him to me."

I sat beside her.

"I know, sweetheart. We'll look for him."

Daniel stepped into the hallway.

A few minutes later, there was a soft knock.

I opened the door.

Lupita stood outside holding a slightly dusty stuffed rabbit.

"I found this beside the reception desk."

Lily ran toward her.

"Benjamin!"

Lupita knelt and handed it over.

Lily hugged the rabbit, then looked up at her.

"Thank you."

"You're very welcome."

Lily returned to the bedroom, holding Benjamin against her chest.

I looked at Lupita.

"You've helped us twice tonight."

She smiled.

"He's an important rabbit."

I felt my eyes sting.

"Very important."

She hesitated before leaving.

"Mr. Vance, I hope you know not everyone here behaves the way they did downstairs."

I nodded.

"I know."

She looked relieved.

Then she returned to work.

Daniel came back a few minutes later. He'd arranged for food to be delivered to the suite and had asked the rooms division director to begin reviewing the incident.

He apologized again.

I asked him to sit down.

For twelve years, the Grand Regent had been one of our most successful properties. Its financial reports were strong, and its guest satisfaction scores remained above the company's required standards.

Yet two employees had just tried to send a father and child away despite a confirmed reservation.

"I need to understand how this happened," I said.

Daniel nodded.

"I'll speak with the front desk."

"That's not enough."

He looked at me.

"I want to know whether other guests have experienced the same treatment and whether complaints were properly reviewed."

Daniel was quiet.

Then he said something that troubled me.

"We've had a few concerns about the front desk's handling of guests during busy events."

I looked at him.

"What kind of concerns?"

He hesitated.

"Some complaints about the way certain reservations were handled."

"Why am I hearing about them now?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Then he admitted the complaints hadn't seemed serious enough to reach the corporate office.

I thought about Patricia telling me to find a cheap motel.

I thought about Karla laughing when I asked her to check the executive reservation screen.

Then I thought about Lupita, who had recognized a problem from across the lobby.

"Daniel, I want the records reviewed by someone outside the property's management team."

He nodded.

"I understand."

I stood.

"Tonight, I'm going to put my daughter to bed. Tomorrow, we'll discuss the rest."

After Daniel left, I returned to the bedroom.

Lily was sitting beneath the blankets, holding Benjamin.

"Daddy?"

"Yes?"

"Was that lady mad because we don't have fancy clothes?"

I sat beside her.

I hadn't realized how much she'd heard.

"No, sweetheart. She made assumptions she shouldn't have made."

Lily looked down at the rabbit.

"But the towel lady was nice."

I smiled.

"Yes. She was."

Then Lily asked a question that stayed with me long after she fell asleep.

"Would she still have helped us if you didn't own the hotel?"

I looked at my daughter.

"Yes, Lily. I think she would have."

She nodded.

"Then she's a good person."

I kissed her forehead.

After she fell asleep, I sat beside the window, looking down at the city.

The Grand Regent's lights glowed against the dark streets.

Somewhere below, Patricia and Karla were finishing their shifts.

They now knew I owned the hotel.

But I wasn't thinking about their reaction to discovering my identity.

I was thinking about the guests who had stood at that desk without a corporate reservation, a direct line to the general manager, or the ability to demand an investigation.

And I wondered how many had left believing they simply didn't belong.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: The Security Footage Revealed More Than a Reservation Error, and the General Manager Had to Explain Why Earlier Complaints Had Been Ignored

[1

post-8982","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-family-drama-stories
["GET
