The bouquets had been redirected under the arrangements Caroline made with the florist, and the caterer was coordinating the remaining food distribution.

The wedding website displayed the postponement notice.

I had imagined this hour so differently.

I was supposed to be sitting near the front of the ceremony, watching Samantha walk toward Greg while the people we loved gathered among the roses.

Instead, I stood beside the kitchen window, wondering whether my daughter would ever look at the vineyard without remembering what happened.

Samantha came downstairs wearing jeans and one of David's old sweaters.

She'd found it in the guest-room wardrobe.

It was too large for her, but she looked comfortable in it.

She stood beside me and looked toward the garden.

"Dad would've been furious."

I nodded.

David had never been especially interested in social appearances. He disliked elaborate dinners, avoided formal clothes whenever possible, and preferred spending an afternoon repairing equipment to attending a reception.

But he loved Samantha.

And he would've been deeply hurt to learn that she'd agreed to exclude me from her wedding.

Samantha seemed to understand.

She looked down at the sweater.

"I think I was trying to impress them."

I waited.

She explained that Greg's parents made her feel unsophisticated. They discussed expensive resorts, influential friends, private clubs, and exclusive events as though those things were ordinary parts of everyone's life.

At first, she was excited to be included.

Then she became afraid of doing something wrong.

Vivian criticized the way Samantha dressed and suggested that certain childhood stories weren't appropriate for formal gatherings.

She told Samantha that the Whitmore family's reputation depended on presenting the right image.

Over time, Samantha began repeating those opinions.

She looked toward the vineyard.

"I started feeling embarrassed when Greg called this place a farm."

I felt a sharp ache.

She'd grown up here.

She'd helped David plant vines, fed the chickens we kept when she was little, and learned to drive on the gravel road behind the production building.

I had believed those memories meant something to her.

Samantha looked at me.

"I know how awful that sounds."

I didn't tell her it was fine.

It wasn't.

Instead, I asked when she began feeling that our home was something to hide.

She thought for a moment.

"After I met Vivian. She kept talking about the kind of family Greg came from. I wanted her to think I belonged."

I nodded slowly.

"Did she tell you I didn't?"

Samantha began crying.

She admitted that Vivian had made several comments about my clothes, my truck, and the fact that I still worked outside.

At first, Samantha defended me.

Then Greg told her his mother was only trying to help her fit in.

Eventually, she stopped arguing.

I looked toward David's photograph on the mantel.

For decades, he'd told Samantha that she could belong anywhere without pretending she was someone else.

Somewhere along the way, she'd begun believing that becoming part of Greg's family required her to be ashamed of her own.

Samantha wiped her face.

"Mom, I didn't just believe Greg. I agreed to exclude you."

I looked at her.

She continued.

"I could've said no. I could've told him that if you weren't welcome, there wouldn't be a wedding here. But I wanted everything to go perfectly, and I thought you'd eventually forgive me."

Her words hurt.

But they were honest.

I appreciated that she wasn't blaming Greg for every decision she'd made.

I asked why she thought I would forgive her so easily.

She looked down.

"Because you always do."

The answer settled between us.

For years, I'd been the parent who resolved problems before Samantha had to experience their consequences. If she forgot something for school, I delivered it. If she needed money during college, I sent it. If she changed her plans at the last minute, I rearranged mine.

Those actions came from love.

But I was beginning to wonder whether I'd taught her that my needs were always negotiable.

I sat beside her.

"I love you, Samantha. That isn't changing."

She nodded.

"But loving you doesn't mean I have to accept being treated as someone you're ashamed of."

She began crying again.

I held her hand.

Then I asked whether she'd spoken with Greg since the morning.

She shook her head.

He'd sent dozens of messages, alternately apologizing, blaming me, and warning that his investors would hold him responsible for the failed property arrangements.

She'd stopped responding.

I asked whether she still wanted to marry him.

"I don't know."

I nodded.

"Then you don't have to decide today."

We spent the afternoon doing ordinary things.

I made coffee. Samantha helped me prepare dinner. We walked through the garden when the rain stopped, and she told me about a design project she'd been working on before wedding planning consumed most of her time.

She was a talented interior designer, but she'd put several professional opportunities aside because Greg wanted her available for the development.

He'd described her future role as overseeing the aesthetic direction of their hospitality venture.

Now she wasn't sure that role had ever been properly defined.

I asked whether she wanted to return to independent design work.

She looked surprised.

"I suppose I could."

I smiled.

"You were good at it before you met him."

She looked toward the stone house.

"I kept imagining what I could do with that place."

I nodded.

"There's nothing wrong with loving the house."

She hesitated.

"Are you still going to give it to me?"

I took a breath.

"I don't know."

Her face fell.

I continued.

"I intended it as a gift to help you begin your marriage. But the transfer wasn't completed, and now there are serious questions about the arrangements Greg was making."

She nodded slowly.

"I understand."

"I need to make decisions about the property that protect the vineyard. And I need time to rebuild trust with you."

She looked down.

"I know."

For the first time since Thursday morning, we were discussing the house without either of us pretending that eight million dollars was an ordinary wedding present.

It was a substantial asset.

It was also part of a working property with employees, long-term obligations, and memories that couldn't be measured by a valuation.

I couldn't treat it as something to transfer merely to prove I loved my daughter.

That evening, Samantha received a message from her friend Olivia, who'd been one of the bridesmaids.

Olivia wanted to know whether Samantha was safe and whether she needed help collecting her belongings from the hotel.

Samantha showed me the message.

Then she looked embarrassed.

"I've barely spoken to her this week. Greg kept saying she wasn't sophisticated enough to be involved in the investor dinner."

I looked at her.

"Olivia has been your friend since college."

"I know."

Samantha called her.

They talked for nearly an hour.

I couldn't hear the conversation, but when Samantha came downstairs afterward, she looked relieved.

Olivia had offered to help her retrieve her belongings and find a temporary apartment if she needed one.

She hadn't asked Samantha to explain why the wedding was canceled before offering help.

I was glad my daughter still had people who cared about her independently of Greg's family.

Later that night, Greg sent another message.

This one was different.

He forwarded a letter from the investors' representatives concerning the suspended property proposal. The letter requested clarification of the ownership arrangements and addressed the financial commitments already made by his development company.

Greg added his own message beneath it.

If you don't help me fix this, I'll lose everything.

Samantha stared at the screen.

Then she looked at me.

"He's still asking me to sign."

I nodded.

She opened the draft authorization again.

For a long time, she read it without speaking.

Then she closed the file.

"I'm going to let my attorney handle it."

I felt a quiet sense of relief.

The following morning, she met with the independent attorney Miriam had recommended. They reviewed the documents and discussed her position separately from mine.

I didn't attend.

Samantha needed professional advice that belonged to her, not advice filtered through her mother.

When she returned, she told me she'd been advised not to sign the proposed authority agreement without a complete understanding of its implications and the underlying financial arrangements.

She'd also learned that Greg's business obligations didn't automatically become hers simply because they were engaged.

I nodded.

Then she showed me an email she'd sent to Greg.

It was short.

She told him the wedding remained postponed and that she wouldn't sign or authorize any property transaction on his behalf.

She asked him to communicate through her attorney regarding the investment proposal.

I read it once.

Then I handed her the phone.

"How do you feel?"

She thought for a moment.

"Terrified."

I nodded.

Then she added, "But at least I know what I agreed to this time."

That evening, I went outside after dinner.

Samantha joined me on the terrace.

We stood together looking toward the stone house.

The lights were off, and the creek moved quietly beneath the trees.

For years, I'd imagined the building becoming her home.

Now I understood that giving her a house wouldn't necessarily give her the security, love, or independence I'd wanted for her.

Those were things she would have to build through her own choices.

And I would have to learn to support her without trying to make every difficult decision disappear.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: Greg Tried to Blame Me for His Failed Investment, but Samantha Finally Ended the Engagement on Her Own Terms

[1

post-8963","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-family-drama-stories
["GET
