We sat at the kitchen table with the investment documents spread between us, trying to understand how a wedding gift had become part of a commercial development proposal neither of us had properly reviewed.

She kept returning to the same question.

"Why didn't he just tell me?"

I didn't have an answer.

I could understand Greg wanting to develop the property. The stone house was beautiful, and the estate had substantial commercial potential under the right circumstances.

What I couldn't understand was why he believed he could begin making commitments before Samantha owned it or I had agreed to provide additional rights.

Miriam recommended an independent attorney for Samantha. She also advised her not to sign the proposed authorization while she was under pressure to complete it before the wedding.

Samantha called the attorney that evening and arranged an initial consultation.

When she finished, she looked exhausted.

"Greg is going to be furious."

I looked at her.

"Does that mean you should sign?"

She shook her head.

"No."

"Then his anger is something he needs to manage."

She looked down at the folder.

For a moment, I remembered her as a teenager, frightened of disappointing a teacher or upsetting a friend. She'd always cared intensely about being accepted.

Greg had apparently learned to use that tendency.

He surrounded her with promises of a beautiful future and convinced her that questioning his plans meant she didn't trust him.

I wanted to tell her to leave him.

But I knew I couldn't make that decision for her.

Instead, I asked whether she wanted to stay at the farmhouse.

She hesitated.

"I need to talk to him."

I nodded.

"Then talk to him. But don't sign anything simply because tomorrow is supposed to be your wedding."

She hugged me before leaving.

It was the first time she'd embraced me since telling me I wasn't welcome at the ceremony.

I held her for a moment longer than usual.

Then I watched her drive away.

I barely slept.

At six-thirty on Saturday morning, I walked outside with a cup of coffee. The rose garden was quiet, and the lawn where the reception tent should have stood was empty.

Ben was already checking the irrigation system.

When he saw me, he stopped.

"Morning, Andrea."

"Morning."

He looked toward the garden.

"Strange day."

I nodded.

We stood quietly for a moment.

Then he told me Rosa had rearranged the production schedule so the employees could continue their ordinary work without being drawn into the family dispute.

I appreciated that.

My private problems shouldn't become a spectacle the vineyard staff had to manage.

At eight, Caroline called.

Greg and Vivian were still attempting to organize a ceremony at the private club, but the guest count had been reduced substantially. Several people had already canceled their travel after receiving the notice that the original venue was unavailable.

Others were waiting for confirmed instructions.

Caroline asked whether I'd heard from Samantha.

"Not since last night."

She hesitated.

"Andrea, she hasn't approved the revised schedule."

I looked toward the stone house.

That worried me.

Greg was arranging another ceremony, but Samantha apparently hadn't agreed to its final details.

I thanked Caroline and asked her to contact Samantha directly before confirming anything further.

Then I went inside.

My phone rang just after nine.

Samantha.

Her voice was trembling.

"Mom, I need to come over."

"Of course."

"Greg says you're trying to ruin his company."

I closed my eyes.

"Come here. We can talk."

She arrived thirty minutes later, carrying the wedding dress she'd intended to wear that afternoon.

She stood in the kitchen holding the garment bag while tears ran down her face.

I took the dress from her and placed it carefully over a chair.

Then I made tea.

For several minutes, she couldn't speak.

Finally, she explained what had happened.

After leaving the farmhouse, she'd returned to the hotel where she and Greg were staying before the ceremony. She asked him about the investor deposit and the proposed authority agreement.

He told her the documents were ordinary business arrangements and that she needed to trust him.

When she said she wanted independent legal advice, he became angry.

He accused her of allowing me to interfere in their relationship and warned that delaying the property transfer would jeopardize the entire development.

Then he told her how much money was involved.

His company had received a substantial investment advance, part of which had already been spent on consultants, design work, and other expenses connected with the proposed project.

The investors expected the necessary property rights to be secured.

Without those rights, Greg's company would have to address its obligations under the investment agreement.

Samantha looked at me.

"He said if I don't sign, his business could collapse."

I reached across the table.

"That doesn't make it your responsibility to sign a document you don't understand."

She began crying again.

Then she told me Greg had demanded that she call me and persuade me to execute the deed before the wedding.

When she refused, he said she had to choose whose side she was on.

I looked at her.

"What did you say?"

She wiped her face.

"I told him I wasn't signing anything."

I felt an enormous sense of relief.

But I didn't celebrate.

Samantha had been planning her wedding for more than a year. She'd imagined the ceremony, chosen the flowers, invited friends, and prepared to begin a marriage.

Now, on the morning it was supposed to happen, she was discovering how much pressure Greg was willing to place on her.

I asked whether she wanted to postpone the ceremony.

She stared at me.

"What would everybody think?"

I considered my answer.

"Some people will be disappointed. Some will have questions. But none of them have to live your marriage."

She looked down.

"I love him."

"I know."

"I thought we were building something together."

"Then you deserve to know what you're building."

She sat quietly for a long time.

Then she said she didn't want to marry Greg that afternoon.

I felt tears rising.

"Are you certain?"

She nodded.

"I can't stand in front of everyone and promise to trust him when I don't know what else he's hiding."

I held her hand.

"Then you don't have to."

We called Caroline together.

Samantha told her the ceremony was postponed and authorized a notice to the guests. She asked Caroline to keep the announcement factual and explain that the couple would contact invitees if any future plans were confirmed.

Caroline was compassionate and efficient.

She also explained which remaining arrangements needed attention and how the vendors would handle the cancellation.

Samantha listened carefully.

For the first time, she seemed to understand that planning a celebration created obligations affecting people beyond the family.

We discussed the expenses she'd personally agreed to cover. I told her we'd review those separately from my contracts, with the appropriate professional advice, rather than assume everything belonged to one person.

She nodded.

Then she called Greg.

I went into the next room to give her privacy.

I could hear the tension in her voice, but I couldn't make out most of the conversation.

After several minutes, she came into the living room.

Her face was pale.

"He says I'm humiliating him."

I looked at her.

"What did you tell him?"

"That I'm not getting married today."

She sat down.

Then her phone began ringing.

Greg.

Vivian.

Richard.

Several relatives.

Samantha stared at the screen as though she couldn't believe how quickly everyone had begun demanding an explanation.

I remembered my fifty-nine missed calls.

I understood exactly how she felt.

I asked whether she wanted to turn the phone off for a while.

She nodded.

We put both phones on silent.

Then I made lunch.

It was a simple meal of soup and sandwiches. We ate at the kitchen table while rain moved across the vineyard.

Samantha's wedding dress remained in its garment bag.

At noon, Miriam called with an update from the investor's attorney.

The investment group had acknowledged receiving her notice that I hadn't authorized the proposed development or signed the purported letter of support.

It was suspending further consideration of the property arrangements until the ownership and consent issues were resolved.

That didn't determine Greg's obligations to the investors, but it established that they could no longer treat his representations as confirmation of my agreement.

I thanked Miriam.

Then she told me Samantha should preserve the communications she'd received from Greg concerning the property and financial arrangements.

I explained that she'd arranged independent legal advice.

Miriam said that was appropriate.

When I returned to the kitchen, Samantha was reading an email on her laptop.

She looked up.

"Mom, I found something."

I sat beside her.

The email was part of a conversation Greg had forwarded to her several weeks earlier while they were discussing the wedding guest list. At the time, she'd paid attention to the names and seating arrangements, not the business correspondence below them.

Now she was reading the entire thread.

Greg had written to one of the development advisers about the planned investor visit.

He explained that the wedding would allow the investors to experience the property before the formal transfer.

Then he addressed my attendance.

He said the event would be easier to manage if I wasn't present because I remained emotionally attached to the vineyard's agricultural operations and might contradict the development proposal.

Samantha stared at the words.

"He knew you hadn't agreed."

I nodded.

She scrolled down.

In another message, Greg described his plan to secure her cooperation immediately after the wedding, when the transfer of the stone house would supposedly be completed.

He believed she would support the development once she was married and the investors were committed.

I looked at my daughter.

She wasn't simply a bride whose fiancé had concealed a financial problem.

She was part of the plan he'd been counting on.

Samantha closed the laptop.

For a long time, she said nothing.

Then she whispered, "He didn't want you at the wedding because you would tell them the truth."

I reached for her hand.

She began crying.

And this time, she wasn't crying because her wedding had been postponed.

She was crying because she finally understood why the man she intended to marry had asked her to exclude her own mother.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Wedding Day Ended Without a Ceremony, and My Daughter Finally Told Me Why She Had Been Willing to Hide Me

[1

post-8962","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-family-drama-stories
["GET
