\u201cYes,\u201d I said quietly. \u201cI am.\u201d<\/p>\n

He laughed at first. Not because it was funny \u2014 but because he didn\u2019t believe me. Because in his mind, there was no possible reason I could have for leaving.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut why?\u201d he demanded. \u201cI love you, Kelly. I always have. I never cheated on you. Not ever.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said it like a defense attorney delivering a closing argument.<\/p>\n

And he was right.<\/p>\n

He never cheated.
He never drank.
He never gambled.
He never disappeared for days or came home smelling like someone else\u2019s perfume.<\/p>\n

He was, by all outward appearances, a good man<\/em>.<\/p>\n

He straightened in his chair, relieved. Confident.<\/p>\n

\u201cI did nothing,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd you\u2019re divorcing me anyway? Are you<\/em> having an affair?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I said firmly. \u201cI\u2019m not.\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked genuinely confused.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen why?\u201d he asked. \u201cWhy would you leave a marriage like this?\u201d<\/p>\n

I took a breath.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you really want to know?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

He nodded.<\/p>\n

So I told him.<\/p>\n

I told him about the first ten years of our marriage \u2014 when I\u2019d stopped sharing my thoughts because he never really listened. He wasn\u2019t cruel. He just wasn\u2019t present.<\/p>\n

Whenever I talked about my day, he\u2019d nod while watching television. When I cried, he\u2019d pat my shoulder and say, \u201cIt\u2019ll be fine.\u201d<\/p>\n

And that was it.<\/p>\n

I told him about raising our children \u2014 how every decision, every appointment, every late-night worry somehow became my responsibility. How he\u2019d \u201chelp\u201d when asked, but never noticed what needed to be done on his own.<\/p>\n

I told him about birthdays I planned alone. Holidays I carried emotionally. Conversations I stopped starting because I already knew how they\u2019d end \u2014 with indifference, dismissal, or silence.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou never complained,\u201d he said, frowning.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s because I got tired of begging,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

He leaned back in his chair, arms crossed.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I was always there,\u201d he said. \u201cI came home every night.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d I said. \u201cYou were physically present.\u201d<\/p>\n

But emotionally?<\/p>\n

I\u2019d been alone for years.<\/p>\n

I explained how loneliness inside a marriage feels different from being alone. How it erodes you slowly, quietly, until one day you realize you\u2019ve disappeared inside someone else\u2019s comfort.<\/p>\n

He shook his head.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis feels unfair,\u201d he said. \u201cYou\u2019re punishing me for not being a bad husband.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s when it finally clicked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not leaving because you did something wrong,\u201d I said. \u201cI\u2019m leaving because you did nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n

He stared at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou didn\u2019t fight for us,\u201d I continued. \u201cYou didn\u2019t ask who I was becoming. You didn\u2019t notice when I stopped laughing the way I used to.\u201d<\/p>\n

I told him how I\u2019d learned to carry everything myself. How I stopped expecting support because disappointment hurt less than hope.<\/p>\n

He opened his mouth to interrupt \u2014 then closed it again.<\/p>\n

For the first time in decades, he was really listening.<\/p>\n

\u201cI waited,\u201d I said. \u201cI waited for you to notice. To ask. To care without being prompted.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd when you didn\u2019t,\u201d I added softly, \u201csomething in me shut down.\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked shaken.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought you were happy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was content,\u201d I replied. \u201cAnd contentment is not the same as being loved.\u201d<\/p>\n

He stood up and began pacing.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo that\u2019s it?\u201d he asked. \u201cThirty years, and you\u2019re walking away because I wasn\u2019t\u2026 what? Emotional enough?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cBecause I became invisible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence filled the room.<\/p>\n

I told him about the moment I realized it was over \u2014 a small moment, really. I\u2019d gotten some good news at work. I\u2019d called him, excited.<\/p>\n

He said, \u201cThat\u2019s nice,\u201d and asked what was for dinner.<\/p>\n

That night, I cried in the shower so no one would hear me.<\/p>\n

It requires curiosity. Effort. Presence.<\/p>\n

And when those things are missing long enough, love doesn\u2019t explode.<\/p>\n

It fades.<\/p>\n

I tell them the truth.<\/p>\n
