Emma was still asleep, curled around a stuffed rabbit, so I took the call into the hallway. Mom answered my greeting with a demand that I call the Whitmore Club at once. Their contracts department had notified Ryan and Vanessa that the discounted reservation could no longer stand without my company’s guarantee. “Did you withdraw it?” she asked. I said I had. Through the phone, I heard Dad asking her to put me on speaker.

Mom said hundreds of guests had been told the wedding would be at Whitmore. She said Vanessa’s family had spent money planning around it and Ryan would be humiliated. When I asked if she had called to see how Emma was, she said Emma would be fine once I stopped reminding her of the incident. She described Ryan’s words as a stupid comment made under pressure. I reminded her that the cake had been crushed beneath food waste before he said anything. Mom repeated that we could buy another one.

I had spent the night wondering whether I should have stayed long enough for the guests to be told why we left. That worry disappeared while Mom talked. She knew Emma had heard him. She had seen what was in the trash. Still, every consequence she named belonged to Ryan. I told her I was not calling Eleanor to reinstate the guarantee. Mom began accusing me of jealousy, then said Emma was five and would forget the whole thing soon. I said I did not care what happened to Ryan’s wedding, and ended the call when she began shouting.

Ryan called before I had put the phone down. He wanted to know what I had done, though the notice apparently explained it. He had spoken to the club and learned the standard price was higher, with no promise that the date would remain available. He told me to call Eleanor and say I had misunderstood the contract. I said I understood it. “You’re doing all this over a cake?” he asked. I poured coffee while he talked, trying to give myself a few seconds before answering.

I asked why he had thrown Emma’s cake away. He gave me the same explanation: it was in his way. I asked how it had ended up under coffee grounds and takeout wrappers. He went quiet, then complained that I always made everything about Emma. It was her birthday party, I told him. He said the weekend was supposed to be for final wedding planning, yet everyone had spent the afternoon attending to a child and her cake. His answer came out in an irritated rush. Only afterward did he seem to hear what he had admitted.

He tried to take it back. He said he had been annoyed, that he would have apologized once I stopped causing trouble. But when I asked if he would tell Emma he was wrong, he said children cry about everything and she would get over it. Vanessa’s parents, he said, had already told important people about the venue. Losing it would make him look unreliable. I could hear the strain in his voice now. He needed the favor he had treated as his own achievement, and I told him my company would no longer provide it.

The call ended with Ryan warning me that I would regret this. Ten minutes later, Vanessa rang. We had met at dinners and tastings, but we had never called each other without Ryan arranging it. She asked whether Emma was all right. I told her my daughter was quiet and had gone to sleep without opening her gifts. Vanessa paused before asking what had happened in the kitchen. Ryan had told her he dropped the cake while moving it. According to him, I had withdrawn the venue guarantee because he criticized my catering.

I told her what I had found and what Emma had heard. Vanessa asked whether anyone else had been present. Mom and Dad came in afterward, I said; Emma had heard the words herself. I could hear movement on Vanessa’s end of the line, as if she had walked into another room. She asked about the contract. I explained that the reservation had been made through my company’s corporate partnership and that Ryan and Vanessa could still approach the club directly. She asked about the price difference. I gave her the approximate figure and told her Eleanor would have the exact terms.

“Ryan said the discount came through my father,” Vanessa said. I had known he had taken credit in front of her parents, yet hearing how far the claim had gone caught me off guard. I told her I had called Eleanor after Mom asked for help and had signed the guarantee myself. Vanessa thanked me. Before she hung up, she said she needed time to sort out what she had been told. She did not ask me to reverse anything. When the call ended, I stood in the kitchen with my untouched coffee cooling beside the sink.

Emma appeared in the hallway wearing mismatched socks. We made pancakes together. She stirred the batter while I cut strawberries, moving slowly because she was watching every small thing I did. I had left her presents near the couch. She glanced at them, then asked whether Uncle Ryan would think they had cost too much and throw them away as well. I turned off the stove and told her the presents belonged to her. I said again that Ryan had done something wrong; she had not caused it. She asked whether Grandma and Grandpa were angry with her. I told her they weren’t, though I wished they had shown her that themselves.

Later I called Jasmine, my assistant, to say I would work from home. She had been with Bennett & Bloom for three years and knew how I sounded when I was trying to keep a conversation short. I told her to leave Monday’s vendor meeting on the schedule. I also asked her to remove Ryan and my parents from the office guest list. Jasmine confirmed the change without pressing for details. It was a practical step. My family had always come into the office when they needed me, sometimes walking past reception as though the people there worked for them too.

By noon, Mom had left seven voice messages. Dad sent a text telling me to meet them and resolve the venue problem. Ryan forwarded the termination notice, followed by an order to fix what I had caused. I saved the messages. My family had a habit of describing an argument differently a few days later, once the original words had become inconvenient. I wanted a record of what Ryan had said when he knew Emma was hurt and of what my parents had asked me to do before any of them checked on her.

Eleanor called that afternoon. Ryan had contacted the club and accused it of breaking its agreement. She had reviewed the endorsement terms with him. He could apply at the standard rate, but another couple was interested in the Saturday he and Vanessa wanted. Eleanor asked whether I wished to reconsider. She did not ask for the details of our family dispute. I looked over at Emma, who was coloring at the table, and said no. Eleanor told me the club would proceed under the contract.

Mom wanted a meeting. I agreed to see her, Dad, and Ryan at my office the next day, after my morning appointments. I thought they might be more willing to hear me somewhere I could end the conversation when necessary. That evening, while Emma opened her presents at home, I tried to put the wedding out of my mind. She took her time with every ribbon. She smiled at a set of colored pencils, then carefully lined them up inside their case. I wondered how long it would take before she stopped checking whether a gift was safe to enjoy.

Jasmine was waiting near reception when I reached the office Monday morning. An envelope had been pushed under the door before anyone arrived. Ryan had written my name across the front. Inside was a letter addressed to Emma. He said he was sorry that her mother had misunderstood what happened and hoped she had enjoyed the cupcakes Grandma bought. He had managed to mention the party without saying he had thrown the cake away. I read it twice, then put it back in the envelope before my parents arrived.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: The Meeting at My Office Exposed How Much of Ryan’s Wedding I Had Quietly Been Paying For

[1

post-8569","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-family-drama-stories
["GET
