I (f23) have been with my fianc\u00e9 (m24) for three years. I love him\u2014or at least I always thought I did. Our relationship had always felt solid: we supported each other, shared dreams, all that good stuff. The only thing missing was meeting his mom. She lived out of state, so it just hadn\u2019t happened yet\u2026 until two weeks ago. Now, honestly, I kind of wish it never had.<\/p>\n

The very first time I met his mother, she immediately asked if I was \u201cproperly taking care of her boy.\u201d She went down the list: feeding him, doing his laundry, cleaning the house. I said yes, even though it stung, because I\u2019m juggling a job and college, and when I get home, I\u2019m still the one cooking and cleaning while he either naps or plays video games.<\/p>\n

When she and I were alone, she asked if I was a stay-at-home fianc\u00e9e. I told her no\u2014I work and study. Then she dropped a bombshell that genuinely scared me. She told me I needed to quit my job, drop out of college, and \u201cfocus on being a good wife.\u201d<\/p>\n

She said, \u201cDear, it\u2019s time for you to know that my son is supposed to be the breadwinner.\u201d Then she explained that their family had this long-standing tradition that had lasted for generations: only men are allowed to work and lead an active social life, while women are expected to stay home and be the keepers.<\/p>\n

Later that evening at dinner, I mentioned that I wanted to become a lawyer. She looked at me like I\u2019d just announced I wanted to run away and join the circus. Then she turned to my fianc\u00e9 and said he deserved someone \u201cbetter.\u201d And he just sat there\u2026 and agreed.<\/p>\n

As if that moment wasn\u2019t awful enough, a week later she returned\u2014with a suitcase. She literally moved in \u201cfor a couple of weeks\u201d to \u201chelp me prepare for marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n

In her world, that meant trailing me around the kitchen to show me how to cook \u201creal meals,\u201d lecturing me about how often a wife should vacuum, and even trying to rearrange our closet so I\u2019d \u201cstop dressing like a teenager.\u201d I felt like I\u2019d been thrown into some sort of twisted domestic bootcamp I never signed up for.<\/p>\n

That night, after she once again told him he deserved better\u2014and he nodded along\u2014I ended the engagement. I packed my things and left. He asked why, and I told him, \u201cBecause you already believe you deserve better.\u201d He said I was \u201cmaking a big deal out of nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n
