I took a deep breath and pulled my phone from my pocket. I called my eldest sister Amanda.<\/p>\n

Then I called Lauren. Then I called Melissa.<\/p>\n
Within two minutes all three sisters were sitting in the living room beside my mother, watching me with confused expressions. I stood in front of them while the sound of running water from the kitchen continued quietly in the background.<\/p>\n

Finally my mother leaned forward slightly and asked, \u201cWhat exactly are you saying, Daniel?\u201d<\/p>\n
Her voice was calm but carried the same tone that had always warned me as a child when I had crossed a boundary.<\/p>\n
I held her gaze and answered clearly. \u201cI said that nobody will treat Natalie like a servant again.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lauren let out a short laugh and shook her head. \u201cDaniel, you are exaggerating. She was just washing dishes.\u201d<\/p>\n
Melissa crossed her arms and added, \u201cSince when is washing dishes a serious problem?\u201d<\/p>\n
Amanda spoke with the serious expression she used whenever she wanted to end a discussion. \u201cWe worked in this house for years too. Why should everything suddenly revolve around your wife?\u201d<\/p>\n
I felt my face grow warm but I did not step back.<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause she is eight months pregnant,\u201d I replied. \u201cAnd while she stands in the kitchen working, the rest of you are sitting here doing nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n
The room became quiet again.<\/p>\n
My mother reached for the television remote and turned off the screen, which made the tension feel even stronger.<\/p>\n

Amanda stood up from the sofa. \u201cAre you saying we are the villains now?\u201d<\/p>\n

Lauren spoke again. \u201cNatalie never complained.\u201d<\/p>\n
Those words struck me deeply because they were true.<\/p>\n
My wife had never raised her voice, never argued, and never openly said she was tired or overwhelmed. But at that moment I realized something simple that I should have understood long ago.<\/p>\n

I glanced toward the kitchen doorway where the light was still on. Natalie was likely hearing every word.<\/p>\n
