Two months after our wedding, my wife and I went to my parents\u2019 house for our first family dinner. She was excited\u2014she prepared her specialty dish, the one I adore, and wore her favorite dress.<\/p>\n

I stood up and took an envelope from my wife\u2019s bag. \u201cI have a surprise,\u201d I said. Mom frowned suspiciously and called my sister back into the room.<\/p>\n

Inside the envelope was a printout of their secret group chat. The bets on how long our marriage would last. The cruel insults about my wife. The photos they shared and mocked behind our backs.<\/p>\n

Their faces fell. My wife\u2019s hand was still in mine. Without waiting for excuses or denials, we walked out. No explanation could undo what they had said.<\/p>\n
