I never imagined that falling in love would come with this much baggage.<\/h3>\n

I\u2019m 30 now, and I\u2019ve spent the last few years building a life I\u2019m proud of. I run my own small but growing business, and I\u2019ve worked for everything I have. His mother, my mother-in-law, has called me everything but my name. Her favorite? \u201cOld gold digger.\u201d As if being five years older automatically makes me suspicious. As if I\u2019d need anything from them when I\u2019ve been financially independent since I was 16.<\/p>\n

She made her feelings clear from day one, but we still married, in secret. We didn\u2019t want the drama. We just wanted to be together. But the drama came anyway. About three months after the wedding, she asked to meet me. Alone. That should\u2019ve been my first red flag.<\/p>\n

Turns out my mother-in-law had her own plan.<\/h3>\n

We met at a quiet little restaurant. I tried to be hopeful, thinking maybe she wanted to make peace. Instead, she pulled out a checkbook and said, \u201cWe\u2019ll give you any amount of money you want if you walk away from Daniel. No hard feelings. Just do the right thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at her, stunned. Hurt. Angry. That wasn\u2019t just an insult; it was an attempt to erase me. I refused. I wasn\u2019t going to be bought off, not for any amount of money. That night, I barely slept. My heart was pounding with everything that had happened, and what it might mean for my marriage.<\/p>\n

The next day, I came home from running errands and to my shock, found Daniel sitting in the kitchen, slumped in a chair, pale, eyes red. He looked completely wrecked. Like the weight of everything had finally caught up to him. He sighed, rubbing his face, and finally looked at me. \u201cI love you. But it\u2019s hard. Being stuck in the middle, between you and them\u2026 It\u2019s tearing me apart. I feel like I\u2019m failing everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

I love my husband. I don\u2019t want to be the reason he feels torn or miserable. I don\u2019t want to be the source of his guilt. But I also can\u2019t keep pretending that what his family says and does doesn\u2019t hurt me deeply.<\/p>\n

How do you stay strong in a marriage when you constantly feel like an outsider to the people who should have welcomed you in? Do I keep waiting for him to fully stand with me? Or am I just setting myself up to keep being second place in his life? I\u2019m tired of pretending this doesn\u2019t affect me. I just don\u2019t know what to do anymore.<\/p>\n
