She stormed out. I left that night without saying goodbye.<\/p>\n

Two days later, I filed at small claims court. Josie screamed over the phone: \u201cHow dare you sue me? Over kids?!\u201d \u201cNo, Jo,\u201d I said. \u201cI\u2019m suing a woman who refuses to take responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n

A week later, my phone buzzed: direct deposit, $2,200. She had the money all along. She just thought I\u2019d let it slide.<\/p>\n

Her words haunted me: \u201cFamily is supposed to be forgiving.\u201d I wondered if I\u2019d become the villain. But then I remembered every time I\u2019d forgiven before\u2014rent money spent on cocktails, car loans unpaid, birthdays I saved at the last minute.<\/p>\n
