A small indulgence, a silent reward for simply surviving.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d just finished my pasta, perfectly al dente, and was savoring the last sip of my red wine. The menu was back in my hands, eyes scanning the dessert options, a little smile playing on my lips.\u00a0Yes, definitely the lava cake tonight.<\/em>\u00a0The restaurant wasn\u2019t too busy, a pleasant hum of conversation and clinking silverware. The man spoke first, his voice smooth, almost purring, but with an underlying steel that instantly put me on edge. \u201cExcuse me,\u201d he said, and I braced myself for some polite-but-firm request. \u201cYou\u2019re not actually going to order dessert, are you?\u201d<\/p>\n

My hand, holding the menu, froze mid-air. My smile faltered, then vanished. I stared at him, my mind scrambling to process what I\u2019d just heard.\u00a0Did he just\u2026 tell me what I am or am not going to do?<\/em>\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m sorry?\u201d I managed, my voice a little breathless with confusion.<\/p>\n

What the HELL is she talking about?<\/em>\u00a0I was perfectly slim, healthy, and I was spending\u00a0my own money<\/em>\u00a0on\u00a0my own treat<\/em>\u00a0after a terrible week. My blood was boiling. I felt a dozen sets of eyes on us, though I couldn\u2019t bring myself to look around. Irresponsible. The word hung in the air, heavy and loaded.\u00a0Why was this so personal? Why did they care so much about my dessert?<\/em>\u00a0I felt a sudden, cold dread replacing my anger. Their faces\u2026 they were so familiar. The tilt of his head, the way her lips curved into that particular smirk.\u00a0No.<\/em>\u00a0My mind screamed.\u00a0It can\u2019t be.<\/em><\/p>\n

I forced myself to really\u00a0look<\/em>\u00a0at them, to scrutinize their features through the haze of my panic. The man\u2019s eyes, a distinctive hazel, now sparkling with amusement at my discomfort. The small scar above his left eyebrow, almost imperceptible. And the woman\u2026 her striking, almost too-perfect blonde hair, styled exactly so. Her posture, regal and composed, even in this absurd confrontation.<\/p>\n

My breath hitched. My heart started to pound, a frantic drumbeat against my ribs.\u00a0No. This is a nightmare. This is not real.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWait,\u201d I whispered, my voice barely audible. \u201cDo I\u2026 know you?\u201d<\/p>\n

The man\u2019s smirk widened, devoid of humor, replaced by something cold and knowing. The woman\u2019s smile remained fixed, but her eyes, those beautiful, calculating eyes, narrowed just a fraction. They exchanged another glance, a silent communication passing between them that felt like a punch to my gut.<\/p>\n

And then, it hit me. A tidal wave of realization, sharp and brutal, leaving me gasping for air. The details. The mannerisms. The way they moved together. The terrible, undeniable familiarity.<\/p>\n

IT WAS HIM.<\/p>\n

And it was HER.<\/p>\n

The world tilted. The sounds of the restaurant faded into a dull roar. Their words echoed in my head: \u201cYou\u2019ve had quite enough\u2026 not in your best interest\u2026 irresponsible.\u201d<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t about the dessert.<\/strong>\u00a0It was never about the dessert. It was about control. It was about public humiliation. It was about their audacious, brazen display of their secret life. Right in front of me.<\/p>\n
